Mr. Pham's Culturally Responsive 1st Grade Classroom
"Exposing my students to the beauty of their own abilities, the vulgar disparities around them, and providing them the tools to unpack all of these will empower them to ultimately change the world we all live in."
In 2013, Hoang Pham was selected for the Sue Lehmann Award for Excellence in Teaching by Teach For America as a result of his extraordinary work in Los Angeles. As a first grade teacher, Mr. Pham takes culturally responsive teaching to heart in the curriculum he plans, the teaching methods he uses, and in the relationships he builds with his students and their families. Last year, 89% of his students scored at or above grade level, including 61% of his students who exceeded grade level according to the STEP assessment. Yet, academic achievement is only one part of what makes Mr. Pham's classroom so incredible, and is only one piece of his vision for students.
